Local Fish Species:

Finland’s inland waters are clean and have a rich and varied fish population. You can fish for both stocked and wild trout at rapids and for other fish on lakes.

  • Perch:

    Perch is in season all year round in Finland’s inland waters. The best catches, however, are to be got around the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The most common perch size is 200-500 grams but they can grow up to a kilogram.

  • Pikeperch:

    The best time to spin/jig for pikeperch is from late June to the end of July. The trolling season for pikeperch is at its best from midsummer to the beginning of autumn.

Happonen
  • Pike:

    Inland pike are in season for as long as the waters aren’t frozen (usually May to November). The best time for catching big pike is in the early spring and late autumn. Pike usually vary in size from 500 grams to 3 kilos but can even weigh 5-10 kilos.
Pulliainen
  • Trout:

    The best season for fishing at big rapids is from late spring to autumn and also after the end of the closed fishing season. Stocked trout are the most common catch but naturally there are also wild trout among them. The most common trout size is 700 grams but over 3 kilo specimens can be caught occasionally.

  • Grayling:



    Grayling is one of the most desired species of fish found in the rapids of central Finland. They can be caught all year round, but the best seasons are winter and summer. The biggest graylings can weigh a kilo; the most common size is between 300 and 500 grams.
Harjus
  • Lake salmon:

    Lake salmon occasionally visit the big rapids at Kuusaankoski while migrating. A lake salmon on the end of a line puts up a great fight. They can also be caught in lakes.

Järvilohi
  • Other fish:



    Asp is one of the biggest species of fish found in Finland. A relatively new acquaintance at the Vilpunreitti destination and a good fighter on the end of a line. Asp average 1-2 kilos and the biggest can be 5-6 kilos.

    The ide is another interesting fish which is common throughout Finland. The best seasons for catching ide are spring and summer and the same goes for asp as well.
